The attachment handle broke on it pretty quickly. It got a crack really, and I was too lazy to deal with returns to I put some duct tape and it seemed to do the job. My biggest problem is that there is no place to store. As far as picking stuff up, it does do a great job on the carpet and hardwood, it's the only reason why I gave it a 4 start. It does the job, but the functionality of it is not great.

I am not happy at all with the instructions. There are 2 settings and it doesn't explain why and for what just a picture of how to change it. It should be included in the price of the vacumme.

I recently purchased the Dyson 28 Animal Vacuum which comes with a flat-out head similar to the low-reach floor tool attachment. After cleaning the easily accessible carpet with my DC28 (which by the way the 28 did an amazing job at), I threw the flat-out head onto the extension wand of the Dyson and went under my king size bed.

The brush and wand lie flat on the floor as it sucks dirt, dust, and hair with brute force. For such a small and low profile tool, it was amazing how much it accomplished. It also does a great job as a hand-held, light-weight vacuum for tight spaces such as closets as the connection rotates and pivots to most angles you'll need to vacuum at.

I've never cleaned under my TV unit. Last night I did. There's two inches of clearance (just enough to hide some cords). I don't want to have to move the stand (not to mention a 200 pounds of additional equipment) everytime I want to clean. I could hear small dirt particles and debris being sucked up by the tool.

My only complaint (and it's really just my clumsiness, not the vacuum's fault) is that the vacuum cannot suck up objects that are too large due to the low profile inlet. There were a few ear plugs deep under the bed where no man could reach, so I tried to use the flat out tool. The result was a clog. Between a plastic straw and some tweezers, I had the ear plugs (3 of them) out. The good news is, there was a lot of compacted dust stuck onto the ear plugs, which is a testament to the brute force of the Dyson DC28 and the great suction design of the flat-out tool.

This product works very well. I have to set it on the high setting vice the low one as the suction power makes it hard to move across my wood floors. It is very effective on the high setting and makes it easy to get under most furniture pieces with the exception of very low clearance items. Essentially gives you the capability of a canister with an upright. Good product, fits with the dyson slim with the included adapters.

Sure it's over-priced, but it's definitely handy for vacuuming the couch to get off what my cat leaves behind. My only complaint is that the suction through the piece is a little wimpy compared with the suction you get by just using the hose itself. Its major advantage is that it is lined with two thin rows of material that catch and hold the cat fur.

This stuff is unbelievable! We had some major stains in our carpet - in fact, so major I was embarrassed to invite people over because the stains were so bad. When I purchased my vacuum back in 2006, I received a bottle of dysolv and a package of zorb, which sat in the box until yesterday (2/4/2010). I finally broke out the dysolv and, quite impossibly, it really removed the stains.

My husband decided to fill some cracks in our cement with tar. During the summer, our dog stuck his paw in the soft tar and tracked in tar all over our oatmeal colored carpet. I tried gumsolv but that just spread the stain out further. I thought we would just have to replace the carpet. Let me tell you, it's GONE! It dissolved the tar and now my carpet looks great!!!

Yes, the pump on the spray bottle could work better, but I'm buying more of this stuff!!!

I bought this Dyzolv spot remover based on the reviews which made it out to seem like the answer to tough spots. Upon using it, it works okay. It certainly isn't a miracle solution like the reviews here on Amazon made it out to be. Also, 13 bucks is a lot to pay for such a small can (think Glade air freshner small). I'll be looking for less expensive spot removers in larger quantities. I also noticed the spray nozzle is cheap and frustrating. BAD BUY for the price!! Look elsewhere and don't be fooled by the 11 5-star ratings this product has gotten on Amazon. They are not deserved.

It seems like a rather mundane tool, and similar to the brush that comes with the Dyson. Not so! While the bristles are not as stiff as I had envisioned, this little tool is actually worth twenty bucks.

It's stiff enough to fluff the pile on my carpet, but soft enough that I'm not worried about damaging the couch. Great for pet hair, stairs, corners, and scrubbing stuff off of hard surfaces.

I'm disappointed that it won't fit on the Dyson in any of the existing tool spots - would it have been that hard to design the shape so it could snap in there? Not too big of a deal, though - this tool is so handy I use it every time I vacuum, so I just leave it attached to the end of the wand and it's ready to go.

I didn't have terribly high hopes for this brush, and actually purchased it to replace the original brush which I had lost. (Well, the wife lost it, but don't tell her I said that). Turns out it's well worth it!

When my original hose broke, I used duct tape to make it work until I got a new one (that was mistake number 1). When I received the new hose, I removed the broken hose from the wand, and the old hose ripped and the plastic got stuck up in the wand. SO, now I had a new hose with a broken wand. I was frustrated and was NOT going to buy anything else at that moment. I finally decided to buy a new wand (from Dyson). It just arrived and I was soooo excited to have a good wand and a good hose. Well, the Dyson wand does not fit into the hose. I used a little bit of Pam to slide it in. And the hose is too long. I cannot snap the wand onto the vacuum. And I am afraid that if I use all of my weight and shove the wand into the hose onto the vacuum, the hose will get stuck in the wand and I will have to buy another wand! Unfortunately, since I bought the hose a couple of months ago, I am sure that the return policy is null and void! I might check since I have nothing to lose!

So, basically, I have just gone to the Dyson website and bought a Dyson hose for $46.94 that is for shipping as well.

Spend the extra money and buy a real Dyson hose from the Dyson website!!!!!!!!

BTW...I have a generic dyson hose for sale. You can let your kids play tug o war with it. Or attach a can to each end and pretend it's telephone. Tape it to the back of your pants and pretend like you have a long stretchy tail....the fun is limitless!!!

Don't buy it. It simply does not fit. It won't slide on the metal wand and then it won't come off no matter how hard you try. It broke trying to get it off. Also, the photo shown isn't the item you get. The photo on the page is the real hose but this company sends a cheap imitation with weaker plastic and it's not even the right color of yellow. Bait and Switch scam. Spend the extra $10 for the real thing.

We needed a replacement hose for several months now and the price was right on this as compared to the OEM hose version. It took about 1 minute to change it out and it's 90% identical to the Dyson at nearly 1/2 the price. The color of the end attachments is a slightly different hue of yellow (who cares!) and the push button is a little different design for connecting the hose to the wand tube, which is no big deal. I actually prefer this design because it slides on and off the tube wand now much easier. The hose itself is identical in material and color. I checked for leaks and there was none noted. No instructions were included, but no tools are required to replace the hose. All you need to do is pull the yellow oval shaped clip slightly forward at the bottom and pull up and the complete hose assembly is disconnected. I also popped off the gray curved tube to the right at the bottom and found a couple of screwdriver bits I've been missing which I'm sure had been degrading the suction so check that out while replacing the hose. I give it 5 stars. It also shipped in a box that fit inside my mailbox. My only dissapointment was the shipping since it took 9 days after I placed my order. My review is only based on having the hose for a couple of days.

I haven't bought this one yet, however, my original hose lasted about four years. Last year I ordered a replacement hose from Dyson's customer service. About six months later it ripped. I called them up and they sent me another one free of charge. Now, that one has ripped and I need another one. I don't know if Dyson is using cheaper materials or what but theirs don't seem to last much longer than the aftermarket ones so for the price, the aftermarket seems like the better deal. I don't know what kind of warranty program they offer though. I use the hose portion of the vacuum every other day.

Okay, normally I hate reviews that don't review the product, I'm writing this one anyway because I wish had read one like this before I bought the Dyson DC07 All Floors upright (I know, different model than the one shown here, but this is a cautionary tale about Dyson warranty policies). I have to say that when the machine worked, it was great. Long story short, I had zero suction for the floor function so I called support. They put me through the paces and had me check for blockages. There were none, so they referred my to a repair shop, stating that as long as it wasn't a blockage issue, it should be covered under warranty. I thought "great, I paid much more than I should have for this vacuum, but it looks like they're standing behing their product." Well I was wrong! About a week after dropping my machine off at the repair shop, they called and said I needed a new clutch and some engine work for a grand total of $180 and that it was out of warranty. I called Dyson and they politely informed me that although I'd spent over $300 on one of their machines a little of 2 years ago, I would still be stuck forking over the $180 for repairs. Let's see if I have this right: spend $180 dollars to fix a 2 year old vacuum cleaner that's out of warranty (so any future repairs will out of my pocket) or ditch the over-hyped Dyson brand name and buy something brand new for around the same price? I consider myself a loyal consumer for companies that appreciate their customers and stand by their product. And believe me, there are still companies out there that do - we recently had an issue with a black and decker product, they had us bring in the old one and shipped us a brand new one! I will not be purchasing another Dyson product in this lifetime.

"Overall great vacuum cleaner with minor complaints" 2010-01-18

I finally ditched my old faithful Kenmore for a Dyson DC14. I was comparing the DC25 vs the older DC14, and opted for DC14 since it carried a larger canister and the ball design wasn't a major feature I wanted to pay for. It's been several months now and I'm happy to report that I am still amazed by the amount of dirt that this device picks off a seemingly clean carpet. Sometimes I wonder if it is secretly devouring my carpet without my knowledge, but that suspicion hasn't proven itself yet.

As mentioned in the title, overall a great device with some well thought out features. I like the ability to disassemble parts of it for cleaning, and almost never having to touch the dust bunnies trapped in the canister. I'm a little disappointed with Dyson by their lack of foresight in providing a better cord. Compared to the Kenmore, this cord is rather flimsy/rubbery and thus very easy to get tangled (feels cheap). Something else that others had mentioned... the quick-draw Telescope reach is great if that's all you're using it for. If you have vacuum attachments from other manufacturers (such as the Ontel Dryer-Max Lint Removal Kit), you'll quickly find yourself in odd positions trying to maneuver the attachment around. Why so? The Telescope reach is rigid and the only place where you can attach the attachment. So if you're in tight spaces, good luck. I cracked the Ontel attachment because of the acrobatics. Again, I think lack of design considerations on Dyson's part.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy the DC14 again if I had to, and hopefully this little wonder will keep going for years to come. Dyson... if you're reading this please improve on the cord and/or provide a connector so that other attachments can be used with your products.

I have had this Dyson vacuum cleaner for about 3 years. I have not been terribly please with its performance. What I do like about it: its bagless, and the hose stretches a good distance. But I don't think it picks up very good overall. I have two furry dogs and continually have to cut fur off the roller on the bottom to try and improve its pick-up. Also, there is no light in front, which isn't too big of a problem, but I'm just used to that with other vacuums. Overall, I don't think its worth the money.

The amount of dog hair that came off of my carpets the first time I used this thing was scary. I didn't think there was that much ground down in there but boy was I wrong! I have 3 dogs--two of which shed heavily. This thing sucks up all of the tumble furs no matter where they are in the house. It's awesome. Slightly cumbersome sure, but hey, when you're a woman who's 5'3" most objects are cumbersome to wield. If you're looking for the Rolls Royce of vacuum cleaners--this is it. Look no further. I really didn't want to pay so much money for something that I don't even want or like to do - vacuuming! But after trying, getting frustrated with, and returning less expensive vacuums, I found this one under $400 at Bed, Bath & Beyond, and they honored a 20% off coupon. They also promised a no-hassle return. So I bought it just to get me through the Christmas holiday, intending to keep shopping for something more reasonably priced. But...wow! I've decided to keep it! I've listed some pros and cons below.

Cons:

Hose angle is a bit awkward; the hose tends to bend at a 90-degree angle at its junction with the wand.

Suction is so strong that I can't really vacuum bath mats or runners.

Heavy to carry up the stairs.

Does not come with a tool for stairs, and too heavy and large to vacuum the stairs itself.

Large profile, so does not fit under kitchen cabinet edges. I have to use the hose instead.

Can't push head-long into a wall and expect it to pick up debris right up against the wall. Makes a loud, startling sound. Must turn the vacuum sideways along the wall, or use the hose.

Pros:

Great suction; picks up stuff where it didn't even appear to be dirty.

Hose is easy to use and very accessible...after you get used to it.

Canister is so easy to dump! No spilling!

Much less tangling of pet hair around the rotating bar than the usual vacuum. I think this is because of its unique shape. Some does still get stuck, but not much.

Good side suction. Picks up stuff alongside walls where on other vacuums I'd have to use the hose.

No blow back when used on tile floors. Just sucks everything up instead of blowing it around - including pet hair.

Long cord.

Fairly quiet, for a vacuum.

I bought this after reading mixed reviews.I used it to clean out the car and I would give it a mixed review also.Not perfect but not useless.When extended the black rubber middle section can close cutting the suction off, so you have to watch how you hold it.I worked well for cleaning out parts of the car.I would have given it 5 stars if you could completely remove the end piece and not just the rubber brush head. I found the width of the tool head to be too wide to clean between the seat and console or that area between the bottom of the car seat and the carpet when you have the door open .

"Someday Perhaps My Dream Will Come True..." 2010-01-27

...to own a decent vacuum!! One that isn't too heavy, too loud, and will clean both carpet and bare floors! Our previous vacuum (before I purchased this one) was an Oreck. It was nice and lightweight, but loud and did a terrible job on carpet. So, I came to Amazon, read countless reviews, and decided upon this particular model of vacuum. Fortunately it wasn't terribly expensive, because to say it has been a MAJOR disappointment would be an understatement!!

Cons:

1. Heavy

2. Terrible on bare floors (scatters the dirt around)

3. Filter can sometimes be difficult to change

4. Filter compartment gets really dirty and is hard to clean

5. The hose attachment doesn't work very well...especially if you add an attachment to the end of it.

6. Horrible for cleaning stairs because the vacuum is heavy and the hose is worthless (see #5).

Pros:

1. Cleans carpet pretty well.

2. Hard to push on carpet (even low-pile carpet).

3. Less noisy than past vacuums that I've owned (but still loud).

So, all said and done, I would NOT recommend this vacuum to anyone if they have bare floors. If you have carpet, then it might be good for you - but keep in mind that you will get a good workout!

After quite a bit of research I decided on the Eureka 4870GZ upright vacuum. After 2 minutes to assemble, I tested it in my living room and was so pleased with it (and the attachments) that I went on to thoroughly clean the entire house. The power attachment was amazing for cleaning the cat fur off the couch! Very easy to use, great suction, solidly constructed. Negatives? It's red. The hose is a bit different than I'm used to. And it took about 2 weeks to ship - I was expecting Amazon's fast shipping but the only option was the seller's ship schedule (oh, and the seller offered "faster" shipping at an additional cost, but it was the SAME ship date either way). So plan ahead.

We bought this because it got great reviews and was a decent price...like $159. Well, I just hate it. It's heavy, awkward, hard to clean, difficult to replace bags and close front. I am trashing it after 2 years and couldn't be happier. Ugh! I called it the "behemouth." Worst vacuum ever. Am still amazed that it got good reviews. Carpet/floor swith a real pain, belt life short, Overall blechhh...and I am not really too picky!

I purchased this vacuum in March '08 due to the numerous rave reviews it received from other purchasers and the fact that it was mentioned favorably in Consumers Guide.

It arrived safely, and without incident. Vacuuming has always been my least favorite chore, so I was delighted at initially using it. And I was especially delighted that this vac REALLY DID want to vacuum...and near tired me out just trying to keep up with it. I do not have a large home (single floor only), and with one child and no indoor pets, our carpets don't really get that dirty. That being the case, vacuuming twice a month is usually all that is required (I sweep the hardwood & linoleum floor areas).

To my surprise after so little use (about 5 months worth) it became louder and a struggle to push. Seems the self-propel action had broke. Unsure as to what was wrong with it, I removed the bottom plate and cleaned debris such as hair, etc. from the roller and surrounding area. I also changed the belt and replaced the bag. None of these solved the problem. The vacuum is still louder than when it first arrived, doesn't pick up like it did when it first arrived, and is an absolute bear to maneuver as it is so heavy to push without the self-propel action working properly.

I have been shopping around for another vacuum--it won't be a Eureka--I just don't seem to have any luck with that brand (this was my 2nd).

And after reading more recent reviews on this vac, it seems that many others have experienced the same problems that I have.

First of all I bought this vacuum and have been using it for approximately 6 month. On the positive side, the suction and actually vacuum is great. I love that it uses HEPA filter technology. However there are some negative points that I would like to point out:

1. At first its very difficult to get the vaccum from an upright to a leaning position to vaccum. Its like its stiff. Over time this gets easier.

2. The stretchy hose is not long enough to do some jobs. I find that the vaccum falls alot when I am trying to get into small spaces or when trying to vacuum the stairs.

3. The cord does stay wound around the back off the vacumm very well. Its like its not big enough to hold the whole cord. I end up just leaving the cord loose in the closet b/c I have given up on actually being able to get it to stay put.

4. The vacuum is on the heavier side which makes it difficult to get up and down stairs and also when it falls when you are using the hose.

Overall I still think its a good vacuum for the price but definately has some limitations.

I bought the Dyson Animal 2 years ago and it still performs like new. I own a St Bernard and it is excellent at picking up dog hair. My dog sheds like no other. I have not noticed any carpet damage or excess carpet fibers in the vacuum after use noted in other reviews. I was worried about spending so much on a vacuum and how long it would continue to work well. My hoover went through so many filters, at $40 a shot, I was so glad this filter never needs changed. It is well worth the money.

The only negative is it has no light. But I never vacuum in the dark.

Ok guys I did alot of research on vacuum cleaners, I have a yellow lab and wall to wall carpeting. Needless to say I was looking for something specific. Read alot of reviews on this model Dyson, figured it was just what I was looking for. Expensive, but what the heck if it picks up dog hair I'll be happy. Anyway it does a great job on the dog hair, the only issue I have (if I had known beforehand I wouldn't have bought it) the round filter(u know the one, u only have to remove and wash twice a yr) mine gets clogged and filled with hair everytime I use it the hair that's supposed to go into the canister. And it smells rather disgusting, so after I have taken out the filter and rinsed it out and removed all the hair trapped in it, left it to dry, then use the vacuum it stinks. Maybe mine is a lemon I'm not sure. So guess what I'm back to using my original vacuum my kenmore canister. Bottom line DON'T BUY THIS MODEL.........IT'S TERRIBLE!

I don't own this so I hope nobody gets to ticked off at me for writing this. Hopefully this will be help you decide. I always wanted a Dyson, but my wife grew up with canister vacuums, so off to Sears we went. This was about 5 years ago. We bought a very nice $350 Sears kenmore canister vac. It still works perfectly I might add. Last week I decided we needed a small vac with a spinning brush for light work on the weekdays when we don't want to haul out the bad boy. I decided I wasn't going to one of the big retailers because reading reviews on small vacuum cleaners does no good. Everyone is 50/50 either hate or love their little piece of junk. I looked up the local vacuum cleaner retailer in the phone book and off we went. He showed us some vacuums and we had a nice chat, and I noticed a bunch of vacuums tagged and lined against the wall. I said "oh, you do repairs as well?" His reply was "yes" and that the ones I was looking at all came in that day. There was maybe ten of them. To my huge surprise about 1/3 were Dysons. I mentioned something about the Dysons and he told me to follow him. We went back into the repair shop and WHOA, about 40 vacuums and 1/3 Dyson. He looked at me and said "Dysons are junk!! They're junk". He told me that if it weren't for vacuum cleaners like Dyson he wouldn't be able to stay in business. It's just not Dyson mind you (me talking now). All the ones they sell at the big box stores really are garbage. I can understand if you can't spare the money for a really good vacuum, but you can spare the money if you're buying a Dyson. Really do yourself a favor and call your local guy. Help ease his/her manual work load by allowing them to make a profit off of you while working on your brothers Dyson. They need that balance.

He let me take a $300 Simplicity for a whirl and I think it made a Dyson move across the floor. Honestly, it was a Ferarri compared to the plastic Dyson. I'm glad I saw what I saw, and I hope this at least prompts you to go visit your local guy. Give him a chance to enlighten you. Vacuum cleaners are a necessary unfortunate evil and they are important for your family and your pets.

Here's the beauty of this whole story. This guy carries the Simplicity line of vacuums cleaners, quite arguably the best vacuum cleaner in the world. It's possible to pay upwards of $1400 for an upright. This guy pressured me in to a $69 cordless Eureka. I told him my budget was $300 for a serious stick vacuum. He said everyone loves this little Eureka so get it and find out. It's junk but it works quite well, has a spinning brush, you're more apt to use it and it only costs $69. What a guy!!!!

p.s. I am not a vacuum cleaner salesman and have never been one or sold a vacuum (only thrown them away)

"Expensive and always maintains great suction power." 2010-01-24

I've had the Dyson DC17 Animal Cyclone Upright for four years, and I'm very happy with it. The suction power is always there. No bags to buy, and to get the dust collection compartment really clean, I use a toothbrush with a long handle attached. A little knock knock on the side of the compartment with my knuckles, and a little toothbrush action, gets it clean. I've never had a problem with anything getting clogged, and I don't use the vacuum on wet carpets either. No problem with the belt as yet either.

The very best thing about it was the cleaners ability to pick up very fine matter, dirty powder, like dark flour. Wow, it keeps up picking it up. After the first time using it, I though wow, my old vacuum sure left a lot of dirt behind. I thought that I would not see such a volume of fine material every time in the canister, but it still keeps working great.

The only problem I've had is with the cheap Berber carpeting in my living room. The vacuum will tend to have such great cleaning force with the brush, that sometimes the cheap carpeting long threads will get sucked into it.

The last vacuum I had was a hand-me-down Hoover that lasted 35 years, so I wanted something really good, and I am very satisfied with the Dyson DC-17 Animal.

"Cheap hose doesn't stand up to use for hard floor cleaning!" 2009-12-31

I Love my Dyson Animal for many reasons, especially for the suction power it has maintained with constant use over the past year and a half. HOWEVER if you use the hose with the hard floor attachment, you will be disappointed. Sure it works great for awhile, but I have had 3 hoses split at the top seam making the hose worthless over the past year and a half. I know I vacuum a lot and pic up a lot of my pet hair with this vacuum, but there is simply no excuse for this fault in design. Dyson has sent me free hoses, but my 2 year warranty runs out soon and this could become an expensive and wasteful (environmentally from discarding hoses) venture. (also Dyson has told me each time that this is not covered under warranty but that they will do it for me as a courtesy). Because I use the hose so much I will not buy another Dyson unless they improve this. In addition, my dyson is now making a terrible noise (like something is stuck in the carpet brush) but nothing is caught. This did start after I accidentally sucked up part of a rug, but I stopped the machine right away. My fault, I admit..but this has happened to me before with cheap vacuums and they did not break. I can't believe that this expensive machine lasted me less than 2 years. I guess if you don't clean often this would be fine, but I thought I was getting a great machine that would stand up to my cleaning. I was partially right, but ultimately I am disappointed.

Just ordered the dc24. It's first job was to clean up the needles the xmas tree left behind. Within 1 minute (yes, really) it became clogged. I spent over an hour trying to find a way to access the intake tube to no avail. I was finally able to unclog it by repeatedly switching on and off the suction and holding the machine upside and and shaking it vigorously while it was running. It finally spit out a small cluster of needles and began to work once more. For 1 minute. Rather than go through this fun exercise again I am spending my time packing this up. Verdict: unless you are vacuuming dust, look for another product. While my more than intimate inspection of the machine revealed that they did come up with some clever engineering ideas in their design, Dyson lost sight of what a vacuum should do: Pick up dirt!

It's not self propelled, its like taking a five pound weight and dredging it through the carpet. The attachment wand on it is clumbsy, you can only use it extended all the way out. If you have something up close it seems to kink the hose since the wand is inside the hose. You have to wash all compartments wich takes alot of time. It looks great buy works terrible. I returned it with in the thirty day period, thats how much it sucks.

I love this lightweight, easy-to-maneuver vacuum. Granted, I live in a pretty small apartment but I do have a cat and this thing just sucks up the hair and dirt. I have a back problem and this 11 pound "monster" has solved my cleaning problems. But the best part is the ease of use. I don't understand most things mechanical, but this was so easy to use. And the help from Dyson was great. Overall, this is a pricey item but you will see the value once you get it. Plus, the manufacturer gives a great warrenty.

I purchased this item on October 2009. I thought all the talk up would give me a quality vacuum. The carpet cleaning button does not work after one month. The cord is too short and falls out. The suction was very, very dissapointing. I use my vacuums twice a week. I seriously would not recommend this vacuum. I will admit-the commercials pulled me in and I truly thought I was buying a quality machine.

"Didn't do much for us" 2010-01-29

Used this today, wasn't expecting a miracle or anything, but wanted to refresh our carpets for a birthday party we're having in a day.

It totally reminds me of something that the employees I worked with in a warehouse that we called Red Dirt, which is a moist sawdust type of floor cleaner that's used primarily in rooms with cement floors, like warehouse shipping/receiving where there's a lot of dust or a lot of the outside dirt gets in. This product as well as the Red Dirt is a moist, grainy type of powder, which when moist is kinda clumpy. It's sprinkled from the bag onto the floors, but with Zorb it goes on carpets only, and then the vacuum is run over it to break it up and mash it into the rug fibers until it dries. The dirt and any residue that is in the carpet is supposed to attach itself to the granules, which then dry and are vacuumed up.

Its damp so it states on the package to let it dry for half an hour. I let mine go for nearly an hour and it was just to the point of almost dry but I didn't have more time to wait as we have an indoor cat and I had locked her in the bedroom until it dried throughout the whole experiment.

This only works with the Dyson vacuum, or so it says. I have the animal DC25 (which I love, love, love).

Vacuumed it up but honestly it didn't really make me go "I'M A FAN FOREVER". In fact, I kind of felt like a fool shelling out $13 for this and won't be buying it again. It was kind of one of those things where I made a mess on the floor, only to work to clean it up again LOL

I used Zorb on the 8 x 10' low pile carpet in my daughter's room (why I bought a light blue rug for a 3 year old I'll never know) and the brown medium pile carpet in the rest of the house and didn't see a marked difference on either the entire carpet nor the stains that are on it.

I have sinus problems and the smell, although pleasant, gave me a headache. Bizarre, considering that the Dyson vacuum made by the company that also makes Zorb is "proven effective for asthma and allergy sufferers".

We've tried to find this product locally since we bought our Dyson four or five years ago, and finally tried Amazon. The order was shipped quickly and the price was reasonable. We have a light colored carpet with what seemed like permanent gray pathways. We've tried all other methods of cleaning and not had much success until the Zorb. Now they look great. We will definitely be returning cusotmers.

I usually write reviews only for products that I hate, and I want to get back at the manufacturer for selling junk. But this Dyson product is so great, absolutely fantastic at removing odors from carpets. I have a terrier that insists on p*ssing all over a spare bedroom carpet. Despite repeated steam cleanings, I could not remove the odor from the room. One treatment with this product as indicated on the package, sitting 30 minutes, then vacuuming up with my Dyson vacuum (which is also great), and the smell is gone. One reviewer indicated that the odor after treatment resembles green tea, they are exactly correct, it does. But it is a pleasant odor which does dissipate. My carpets are light brown, and the product seems to improve its appearance, I guess by removing some of the dirt and light stains. The product is pricey (12.99), but I think well worth it. I would estimate it would treat 3 to 4 rooms, with dimensions about 10'x12' fairly thoroughly. One reviewer indicated that they had a reaction to this product. About 20 years ago I had allergies so bad that I used to get allergy shots weekly for a number of years, and I have had no reaction to using this product.

5 stars all the way.

Ok, so I didn't have high hopes for this stuff....but let me tell you it works!!!!! It came with my recently purchased Dyson Animal....which I LOVE! I tried it today....and well, I'm a little obsessed! Last winter I had 2 very sick kitties (who have since passed away) that defecated on my light colored berber carpet and though I've cleaned it and cleaned it, I still had stains...today, I thought maybe the Zorb would help.....let me just say that it has surpassed my expectations. The stains are barely noticeable now!!! I will still steam clean occasionally, but considering these are older stains that wouldn't budge, I must say again....I am hugely impressed. I tried it on a newer stain left by another kitty who had a bad hairball the other day and it is gone!! I went over it twice with the Zorb, groomed it in, waited the 30 minutes each time and vacuumed each time....it's gone! I'm in love with this stuff! I have to get more!

And, I do have terrible allergies, but this didn't bother me at all...and my house smells great!

"Good when it is not broken." 2010-02-02

This did great job while it worked. Suction was good, and it cleaned well, but the canister design was terrible. Had to really work to empty it. As far as malfunctions, First we had to replace the handle because the on off button wasnt working. Next the hose ripped and we were sent a replacement. Finally the brush started making funny sounds and smelling really bad, was told by Bissell that we would need to take it to an authorized dealer. We were not too into travelling far distances to make this happen so we just bought a Dyson.

I just bought my second Healthy Home Vacuum. Had the first one for about seven years, then my daughter broke it (it didn't konk on it's own). So, did my homework, was tempted by the Dyson, and still ended up with the Bissell Healthy Home vacuum. It really is a great vacuum and I agree with the other reviewers regarding the weight and the awkward dirt container. With that said, I don't have a problem emptying the awkward container because it's so much better than dealing with a bag. There's a trade off and you cannot get away from dust disposal....it's a vacuum!

Other than those two items, it works well in my home with three kids, two cats, and a dog. I like this vacuum above all others because it's a beast when it comes to cleaning and the hepa filter traps the usual particles that other vacuums leave unsettled. It's also affordably priced when compared to other vacuums (got it for a great price at Kohl's).

After seeing ads for this, I HAD to have it. Now I can't wait to replace it, and here are my reasons why:

1. It is heavy and awkward. My upstairs seldom gets vacuumed because it is such a chore to lug the beast up and down the stairs. It does not maneuver well either, and as another reviewer posted, each use is an aerobic workout. Sorry Bissell, but I prefer to do my exercising at the gym.

2. Without the floor brush, it picks up virtually nothing. The floor brush hardly ever works. Sometimes, if I smack the beast on the floor just right (creating a cloud of dust and dirt to clean up), it will come on and work for a little while, but never long enough to actually finish vacuuming an entire room.

3. It is dirty. Filthy even. Cleaning it is a major, dirty pain. Sure, the button pops the canister right open, and a shower of dust puffs out all over the place. Then I invariably have to reach up inside to free the trapped dirt/hair/whatever is preventing the rest of the mess from coming out. The outside seems to accumulate dirt and dust too, so no matter how often I wipe it down it always seems dirty.

So...using the "healthy home" leaves me tired, dusty and frustrated. I would not recommend this vacuum. Nope, not a chance.

I have had one of these for a little over a year now and the cleaning performance is fantastic, much better than our previous Vax. However, the brushes stopped working recently so I ordered a replacement brush motor. When I took the thing to bits it was all rusty inside and more annoyingly the sprocket on the end of the brush motor was rusted onto the old non-working motor and I couldn't remove it at all. I tried WD40, pullers and even a hammer. I hate being beaten when repairing things and this beat me. For the dozen or so times that it cleaned the carpet it did a great job, but I'm not pleased with the build quality at all.

Have owed for 3 years and am searching for a new vacuum...see why:

Pros-

* Cleans great!!! As good as a Dyson, never loses suction even when canister is stuffed. I have 5 pets and a toddler, no complaints in the cleaning power of this vacuum!!!

* Long cord (can do whole 2 story, 2100 sq.ft. house from one plug)

* Long hose (can do whole set of stairs from bottom up without lugging up each step - which is good...see below con)

Cons-

(get ready...it's a long list)

* HEAVY: this thing ways a ton...aweful carrying upstairs stairs and makes it hard to maneuver, weighs more than my 2 year old who is 27 lbs!!!

* BULKY: this vacuum is so wide and bulky I'm constantly running in to furniture, knocking off accessories and filters

* CLUMSY: don't go too far with the hose...it falls over VERY easily. I love it when this happens while I am vacuuming under the bed and the thing falls on me...35 lbs of vacuum on my back feels great!!!

* I'll continue...There is no place to store the crevace tool when you are useing the hose extender...needless to say, I'm always looking for it.

* This is the DIRTIEST bagless I've ever owned. I thought it was supposed to be a healthy home vacuum. When emptying the canister you must have a completely empty trash bag because it empties from the bottom. You then have to shake the dickens out of the canister to get it to empty and dust flies everywhere. Or, you can stick your hand up inside the canister to get all the dirt out. YUCK!!!

* Yes, there's more...DO NOT PICK THIS VACUUM UP BY THE CANISTER HANDLE WHILE ON...dust flies out the HEPA filter. Huh? Yes! But, you can't help pick this thing up by that handle because it's so conveniently placed and works great when this montrosity of a vacuum won't turn a corner.

* Back to the bulky issue...I spoke of running into furniture because of it's bulk...the HEPA filer is on the side and sticks out about 2 inches...I catch it on the ide of my bed...the filter cover pops off, blows the filter out and all the dirt I'm vacuuming comes with it. SO DIRTY!!!

* More...I've had it in repair twice for switch problems...see, this vacuum shuts off the brush it you lift the handle too high. The switch for this has broken twice and caused my brush to not work at all. Good thing I had the extended warranty. This brush shut off is really annoying when vacuuming in tight spaces...the brushes constantly shut off. I don't know why they have this feature on this vauum because there is a manual shut-off switch...stupid!!!

* Lastly...The on/off switch is poorly placed. Because it's so heavy and hard to maneuver, my hand will slide down the handle and accidently push the on/off. It's just annoying, but so is everything else on this vacuuum...just one more thing to make me hate this vacuum!!!

Summary: GREAT CLEANER, AWEFUL VACUUM!!!

My husband and I received the DC25 as a wedding gift. We love it! It is the small version of the DC14 which makes it a perfect fit for our apartment. Since it's small, the bin requires more frequent emptying. I empty once after a full vacuum of my 1bdrm apartment. A house with more rooms should probably use the larger DC14.

The two filters are washable--each month just run them under water and let them air dry for 24hs.

I like that it does not use bags. Less waste and I don't have to stock up on them... plus, easy to retrieve socks! lol.

I don't recommend it for anyone with hyper sensitive allergies, though. Since the dust is collected in a bin, emptying it exposes you to all the stuff it picked up (which was in your home to begin with). Sometimes I need to use a little stick to help release some of the dust/hair clumps as I empty it.

The suction is good and the noise isn't too bad, quieter than some.

Dyson Customer Service is excellent! After a while, I needed replacement parts on it. I called them up and they sent them to me for free! Best yet, they didn't hassle me to send in the defective pieces to determine if it was all my fault. They treated me like an honest human being.

ok, that might seem like a curious comment at the end, but there is a clear clip which regulates whether the vac is sucking through the wand or the head. mine broke off less than a year and there were warning signs that it was coming. for about 5 months before it broke, i had to manually lift up the L shaped piece which also regulates airflow, which is supposed to pop up when the wand it taken out, and then go down when the wand is re-inserted.

the only reason i decided to write this review was because i think this is not an isolated case. my evidence? after calling dyson and having them direct me to a local repair shop in virginia, i went there only to find the person in line before me with the exact same problem. i mean what's the chance of this happening? the repair shop also advised me that he was not sure this fix would be under warranty, as they claim this problem only happens when the wand is inserted with force. i don't recall forcing the wand into the vac, but i also did not know that the warranty had fine print i was not aware. i now need to find the warranty to better understand what the shop meant.

the repair shop called me to advise that they don't know how to fix a dyson (although dyson instructed me to take it to them). so after losing 10 days, i pick it up and now have to take it to a designated UPS store to have it shipped back to dyson. while it is nice that dyson pays for s/h and allows you to simply drop off the unit (UPS store packages for you), what upset me was that the designated repair shop could not send it directly to dyson (or have it picked up by UPS at the repair shop), i needed to pick up my vac then take it to UPS. i will update this review once i receive the vac back from dyson.

So after seeing my wife struggle with our old Dirt Devil and broom I decided it was time to invest in a better vacuum and of course the reviews on Amazon all pointed to the Dyson DC25 All Floors. This vacuum is unbelievable and worth the $500 and 5 year warranty you get with it. Assembling the vacuum is very easy however I have to say the instructions are inadequate and you might have to figure it out yourself. Once assembled I would recommend vacuuming your carpet or floor with your old vacuum first and then try this baby. You might faint when you realize all the dirt you've been walking over all these years, dirt your other vacuum has simply been ignoring. After one swing of the Dyson you can actually notice the carpet area that was cleaned and the one left unclean, its that amazing. Definitely worth every penny.

I appreciate the Dyson ball technology for ease of turning the vac, but the suction is sadly lacking. The vacuum barely fluffs the nap of my carpet, which is a short, tight shag style. And good luck on getting under any furniture--traditional upright vacuum cleaners at least allow you to lower the vac to floor level to get under some furniture. With the DC 25 ball, you have to buy another $50 attachment which you have to use with the wand like a canister vac. My inexpensive Hoover 12 amp HEPA canister bagless Wind Tunnel vac with the motorized carpet head has great suction and vacuums rings around this Dyson ball at a fraction of the cost. With the Dyson, you can hardly tell that the carpet has been vacuumed when you are done. Have used the vacuum three times and am very disappointed.

Some of the reviews comment that the battery only lasts about 6 minutes. They are correct but if you need to use this vacuum for more than 6 minutes you probably should use a larger vacuum cleaner. This is perfect for quick clean ups and vacuuming the car. However if you want to clean an entire room then this vacuum is not for you. This is the best Hand Held vacuum I have owned.

For a company that prides itself on engineering, Dyson has made a severe engineering error with this product and is, in my opinion, in a severely self destructive denial mode. I have owned it for 2 years and now the battery is down to 2 or 3 SECONDS. This product is otherwise well designed. Dyson should at least offer spare batteries (hopefully improved) at cost or an adapter to fit into the battery receptacle to turn it to a corded model. I would even pay for this to be able to recoup usage for the unit. This is, after all, not a cheap vacuum considering that it is a portable. I would not recommend this product.

I purchased one of these units yesterday, and thought the suction and dirt removal ability were great... Until I realized the debris in the canister was the fiber of my carpet, not pet hair.

Upon inspecting the height adjustment mechanism, I determined there is no way to adjust the height, as the adjuster cam doesn't even touch the wheel assembly. Either the factory put in the wrong parts, or the product is mis-designed. Either way, if I could give this machine less than one star, I would.

We purchased ours from [...], refurbished. It arrived (after a long wait) as others have said, "Dirty, used." Debris in canister, machine very dusty, and some type of seed pod stuck in the rigid extension tube. Called customer service, displeased with this and was pretty much told, "Well, you did buy a refurbished one..." No offer to send it back free, no offer to clean and return it to us, etc. In fact, customer service said unless it was deemed broken we would incur all cleaning, repair, and shipping charges.

Now on to the vacuum.

I detest the rigid extension pole. Inflexible and I don't see how this adds to the design or function.

This vacuum does not vacuum close to baseboards. For this area you must use the rigid extension pole or disassemble the pole and get down on hands and knees to clean with the softer short part of the hose.

The hose, extension pole or not, is not long enough to have vacuum cleaner at bottom of stairs and reach up to top of the stairs. Must do bottom stairs with vacumm at bottom of stairs, then haul vacuum cleaner upstairs to clean uppermost stairs. (Thankfully we saved the extension hose from our old dead vacuum and it sort of fits together with Dyson's hose, so we can get away without hauling it if we use that and it doesn't come apart.) Dyson's photo of the person vacuuming stairs is misrepresentation of how long the hose is.

It is a powerful vacuum for basic floors (other than the edges, that is.) Like others have said, it removed dirt and lint from our carpets that we didn't know was there because we thought our carpet was clean after using our other vacuum.

I like the bagless canister. A little dusty for disposal into trash, but at least I know when it's full and can tell if I vacuumed up a toy and easily retrieve it.

The cord wrapping/storage area was an afterthought by the company. When the cord is wrapped up on its 2 storage hooks, you are unable to pull up the extension pole and use the hose piece for vacuuming. I would prefer to be able to unwrap only a small part of the cord, vacuum a small spill, and be done without having to rewrap the entire cord again.

Not as noisy as our old vacuum was.

I'd been using my Hoover for years, which I thought did an adequate job. My carpets always appeared clean. Then, sadly, one day my Hoover died. I was hesitant about buying a reconditioned Dyson since it restricts the warranty. However the unit arrived in pristine condition. The only difference between the unit I received and a brand-new one, from what I could tell, was tape holding one of the accessories to the main body for shipping purposes. All the manuals, parts, etc were spotless and nothing was missing from the package. It was easy to assemble, although it did take me about 20 minutes to get all of the parts together.

MAN, did the first trial run open my eyes. I went over my 760 square feet of carpet and the couch cushions. The trapped dirt (deep within the couch cushions and low-pile carpet) literally filled the dirt canister on the first pass. This thing sucked dust out of cushions that I'm sure has been there for ages. My allergy reactions have been reduced dramatically, and after regular use (2-3 times a week for the last 7 months) the suction hasn't suffered at all. I'm extremely pleased with this vacuum and would give it 10 stars if I could!

I've had my Dyson for about 3 years now and heard about this attachment a year ago. I could never find it in the stores but am now kicking myself that I didn't look on line sooner! I love this attachment. It comes with a converter piece so it fits all Dyson models. The bristles are soft enough that you can use it on furniture without worrying about scratches. Only thing I was concerned about was that using it to vacuum literally my whole house, the vacuum itself got very hot and I think if I did it every week I'd end up burning out the motor. Overall though, it's an excellent attachment and well worth the $25. If you're anything like me, it's quite irritating to dust and see the particles floating around in the air. This takes care of that completely! It is awesome for vacuuming your window blinds as well.

"Is not an improvement over DC17 Animal" 2010-01-27

I was very excited in purchasing this vacuum cleaner. Previously I've owned a DC17 Animal since it's been on the market, and it still functions great! Due to some changes in our living arrangements etc. we do not have that vacuum cleaner in the house anymore. So we thought this would be a great chance to "upgrade" to a newer version of Dyson. We've always wanted to try out the ball, seemed much easier to handle on the commercials, and we knew the technology and swore by it. Our original thought was to get the DC15 Ball, but for some reason that was "sold out" or "not in stock" at every store I looked at, including Amazon. After careful research we went with the DC 25 Animal.

Well, in short, we were disappointed in this particular model (DC 25 Animal). Though the machine might be the best find for many, it did not measure up to our expectations from the DC17.

Pros:

- Light weight

- Easy to maneuver

- Easy to clean out the bin

Cons:

- Poor suction power (over the original DC17 Animal)

- Short power cord

- Small dust bin

Overall, I could not understand why this machine shares the "Animal" with the DC17, aside from the color being common. It seems that Dyson took away the actual value of a vacuum cleaner and tremendously improved it's handling and weight. To me the most important thing for a vacuum cleaner is it's suction power and ease of cleaning. Though the ball makes it easy to "roll around" the room, the plugging and unplugging adds a hassle that previously was not there.

I could also understand if Dyson says that this vacuum cleaner was not meant to be as powerful as the DC17 (eg. 11amps vs. 12amps). Being the same color with a higher numbered model(DC25) and the same product label (Animal) gives the impression that it's a newer and better version to the old Animal. Nowhere in the ads did I see that this had less suction power than the DC17.

I would recommend this vacuum cleaner to those who have only hardwood/tile floors or berber carpet and/or thin/silk rugs.

I would NOT recommend this vacuum cleaner to those who have plush carpeting and/or big rooms.

Detailed review:

As a background here's our setting, and the environment we use the vacuum in:

Our home has hardwood and tile on the first floor, plush wall to wall carpeting on the second floor and stairs, and berber carpeting in our family room. Our pet is a medium hair cat.

Weight: 5 out of 5 Stars

A HUGE plus. This one probably weighs about half of DC17! Awesome improvement! I was able to pick this one up at any time, take it up or down the stairs without any problems.

Handling: 4 out of 5 Stars

A plus. It's definitely at least as easy as it's shown in the commercials.

It's very easy to handle and maneuver around any furniture, chairs, walls etc. The only thing I found awkward was the way you have to get the lever to "click" on the bottom before it actually stays where you put it. Then you have to step on the lever a certain way to release and use the vacuum. The DC17 was easier this way, as soon as you brought it to the upright position it clicked and stayed. This one you have to make an additional effort for that special click.

Capacity: 3 out of 5 Stars

The Clear Bin is very small. To me this is indifferent. I can make do, I'd just would have to empty the bin after each use. Though I'd prefer the machine be able to "adjust" to my way of doing things, this is an easy enough change in my habits. It's easy enough to empty.

Suction Power: 2 out of 5 Stars

This was one of the causes for me to return this model. After the price tag and the DC17 Animal (which is 12amps as opposed to 11amps on this one), this model did not seem to do a fair job on our wall to wall plush carpets in the bedrooms. However, it did do a great job on the hardwood, the rugs and the berber carpet. I could see it picking up the cat hair, just like the DC17.

One "improvement" to the DC17 is, it would do the rugs without lifting them and sucking them up. Doing the edges and corners of the rugs, it did not catch the corners and get stuck. With the DC17 we would have to have somebody hold down the edges/corners so the machine wouldn't grab it.

On the stairs, the weight was very helpful, I could carry it up to the landing without a problem. However, the power of the new attachment is not even close to the one that was on the DC17. The DC17 actually CLEANED the carpet on the stairs, this one did not. You couldn't even see the "vacuum mark" on the carpet. I was less than impressed.

CORD Length: 1 out of 5 Stars

The cord is very very very short. With the DC17 I was able to plug it in, in the outlet right at the middle of the floor and was able to do the WHOLE floor without having to unplug and replug. This one, I barely was able to get halfway through the room before the cord ran out! Not sure what the reason of having a shorter cord would be. It's not user friendly at all.

My history with vacuums is bleak. I wreck vacuums. Bear with me while I tell the sad story with the happy ending.

My first vacuum was a used truly ancient Hoover so old (but worked very well) it had the metal plate on the bottom that was easily removed with the flick of a turn style type large flat screw so the plate dropped off giving access to remove a jammed item or thread tangled around the roller or to change the belt. Once belt changed, put plate on, turn large screw. Done. I wished I hadn't given it away.

Since then I have owned 4 Hoovers. With each constant "what the hell is wrong with it now", I would buy the next more expensive model hoping against hope that expense equaled RELIABILITY and EASE OF USE. Alas it was not to be. Over the years Hoover made it impossible to change a belt or remove a jam without using the tiniest of screwdrivers, spending hours taking the vacuum apart with dust flying everywhere and let's just say it is not surprising consumers are putting the local vacuum repairman's children though college. There are vacuum repairs shops everywhere some quaintly called vacuum hospitals. So there are 2 very expensive Hoovers in my garage with broken belts or some simple thing Hoover insists on making it impossible to easily remedy and the other 2 given away. I am too cheap to give away the expensive Hoovers and too stubborn to take them to a repair shop. Between buying the Hoovers, I researched and purchased 2 Dirt Devils each more expensive than the other. Like Hoovers, Dirt Devils are a pain in the rump to unjam and unlike Hoovers, they don't work well. I secretly wondered if vacuum manufacturers had stock in the repair shops. So the Dirt Devils too sit in my garage. I never purchased the cheapest vacuum model always mid-range up to the most expensive models. Now understand, this vacuum accumulation is over 17 years and somewhere in there was the worst of vacuum of all - The Housekeeper Plus which upon its maiden sweep, broke a belt or something. Off to vacuum hospital where the tech showed me a whole slew of Housekeepers, Hoovers, Dirt Devils, you name it lined up in his shop. After the 3rd break in as many weeks and finding it impossible to find bags, The Housekeeper Plus was taken outside, smashed onto the sidewalk and dumped into the trash. I used a broom and dust mop. (no carpeting in my house - tile and wood)

With 2 older cats the broom method worked fine. But in the last few years two stray kittens were adopted and the broom/dust mop method was no longer sufficient. I spend HOURS researching vacuums/reading reviewer comments and no longer trusting Consumer Reports Magazine. Spending hundreds of dollars on another crappy vacuum was NOT an option. All I wanted was a vacuum that picked up cat hair/dander and dirt (as well as dog hair when my son and his dogs visited), was bagless ( I liked that in several of my Hoovers and one Dirt Devil) and something that little ole me could change a belt, unclog a jam and figure out what was wrong without a million tools or being rocket scientist.

I jammed it within a week. The handle would not go down. Clenching my teeth, I saw a hose in the area where the handle refused to bend any longer. I easily unclasped the hose by squeezing the sides of the hose and out dropped a pen which wouldn't bend preventing the vacuum handle from going up. NO BELTS that I can see and I have had mine for a year. I ran over everything and everything was easily removed. Several times the string on some cat toy or cord of a mini-blinds on my French door windows would wrap around the roller jamming it. Then came the real test. While using the hose to vacuum around the cat bowls picking up stray hard cat food that spilled out of its bowl, the door bell rang. Distracted, I accidentally ran the hose over a dish of wet Fancy Feast (Trout flavor) and the suction scooped some of it right up into the vacuum. That gunked up the works and smelled like hell. Worse, the wet fishy Fancy Feast swirled around and mixed with the once dry Scoopable kitty litter that was vacuumed up around the cat box the day before. They call it CLUMPING for a reason. Having no time to clean it as I was called away, the Dyson was put away where the mess hardened and caked everywhere. Surprisingly the vacuum still worked but the suction was down. With much trepidation, Lysol cleaner, double rubber gloves, and most important of all a drywall sanding mask firmly in place, I went to work. It was incredibly easy to remove the whole vacuum head, hoses, roller, and everything else because there was only a simple twist of one pair of plastic screws. Dyson made access to every part EASILY reached and in no time the hose, roller, plastic roller casing (the underside of which was completely covered with gunk), etc. was sparkling clean. I let it dry for a few hours, put it all back together in a snap and the vacuum works better than ever.

I wreck vacuums. But not a Dyson vacuum.

After much deliberation I finally broke down and decided to get the Dyson DC25 Animal. I relied on many reviews here and other places in making my purchase so I felt the need to contribute back with my review. I paid a little over $400 at another retailer (after discounts) and I feel it is well worth the money. The suction is definitely the strongest I have experienced in a vacuum. This is my first higher end vacuum so I was impressed by many of the features. The swivel ball is nice, definitely a step up over the regular one way vacuums. I would recommend this to most people who are fed up with the cheap vacuums like I once was.

This is my sixth vacuum and by far the best! I cannot believe how much suction this little machine has. On first day of use, it was actually shocking to learn my carpets were that dirty! This vacuum is light weight very easy to use. We have 3 girls with very long hair, a cat and a dog. My kids can carry the vacuum up and down the stairs without problem. The best feature that I like is I don't have to worry about any belts breaking or falling off continuously like all my previous vacuums. The Dyson ball has a separate motor with no belts! I also like how the vacuum is designed to reach under furniture and swivel into corners. It's small and doesn't take up much space and fits in my coat closet perfectly. Not having to buy bags and filters is also a plus.

My wife and I have had an earlier version of this vacuum, the Hoover model U5753-900, for many years. Last week the switch went on it. My wife and I shopped around at some local stores and wanted to replace our vacuum with a similar model, maybe the next model up the line. We found the best price on Amazon and ordered this unit, model U5786-900. We are extremely pleased with the improved performance of this model. We always had great performance from the other Hoover as well, which is why we wanted to get another Hoover model to replace it. We have had other brand vacuums over the years (we are homeowners for over 33 years) and the Hoovers always outperform the others and last longest.

The particular features I like on this U5786 are the improved roller brush hairs, which are strong yet flexible, and the lightness of the vacuum overall. I was surprised to find it is almost self-propelled and very easy to push. It comes with three additional tools in the top compartment, including a mini roller head that is perfect for couches and other furniture. They advertise it as a Pet Hair Tool, and with our 12 year old Golden Retriever always finding a way to get to her favorite couch spot, this tool will get a lot of use.

Another great innovation over the U5753 that they put in the U5786 is a one-touch Bottom Empty Dirt Container. I really like the whole bagless vacuum concept, replacing the need to pull out and dispose of a filthy dusty vacuum bag all the time - when is it full, where are the replacement bags, hope I don't rip the replacement bag putting it in the vacuum, all that baloney. And I always would get hit with a cloud of dust in the face when I removed a full bag, and sometimes the darn bag would break - great fun let me tell you. So I was very glad that they came up with the bagless canister design. And the Hoover design is great, very efficient and easy to empty, clean, and reassemble. Anyway, now you don't even have to take the canister apart and knock off the dust on the filter and re-assemble everything and wash your hands - you press a button and the bottom pops open, and into the garbage can everything goes. Also, there is a crank on the top and a plastic bar inside that knocks all the dirt and dust off the filter for you - and into the garbage can. Clip the bottom back up and slip it back in, and away you go. I still wash my hands but I don't really need to with this design. The extension arms snap into the side of the vacuum, easily accessible. Also, a thinner extension arm fits into one of the regular extension arms for storage - good idea.Wind the cord onto the back of the unit and into the closet it goes. I think some higher-end models have a retractable cord, I would have liked that, but this one was in my price range.

This is really a well designed, well functioning vacuum that does the job superbly and lasts a long time and isn't a pain to deal with at all. And oh yeah, I broke out my screwdriver set, did a little digging into the U5753, and was able to remove the defective switch. Tested it with a Volt-Ohm meter and verified it was NG. I went to a local vacuum repair shop and got an identical replacement switch for the U5753 for $10, popped it in and it works like a charm. So now I have a backup / upstairs vacuum and a main vacuum, both of which I am very pleased with.

Can't go wrong with Hoover in my book.

sorry for a bad review. but it is amazing that hoover sells a product like this one. it's loud, does not perform well, is cheaply done and came scratched and already used or refurbished? not used since it's first use. i guess i should take it back to amazon but am afraid that it is too late for a return now (took it out of the box 3.5 months after purchasing it) not recommending this product at all. Have a hoover stick vac from the platinum lynx series (Li-Ion powered) Small and quick at hand, much better quality. Great for small quick jobs.

I have used this vac several times and like it a lot, especially it's ability to pick up the pet hair from my long haired lovable old kitty cat who loves me so much she follows me to whatever room I'm in and is often in my lap, even when I'm trying to type.

I previously owned a Fantom Cyclone [no longer in business], which was very innovative at the time, including a HEPA filter, was bagless, and had an extension stored in the handle, from a TV infomercial. It has served faithfully for 19 years, but when I read that this new Hoover excelled at picking up cat hair, I decided it was time for a change.

It has the same innovative features as the Fantom and does an even better job with its more powerful suction and is self propelled which makes the chore a little easier. I particularly like the little red light that comes on when it hits an area with extra dirt so you can hit it again. It always works. It is also easy to carry up and down stairs because the handle is in the middle so it's better balanced to carry. I was used to emptying the Fantom after each whole house use and this one is just as easy to empty [I do it outside to eliminate the possibilty of an accidental mess on the carpets I just cleaned].

It's removable handle extension is even better than the Fantom's because it is more powerful and has an innovative stored in the front and easy to get out, spinning brush which does a good job of picking up pet hair from upholstered furniture.

I like everything about it.

We bought this vacuum because it was the only one Consumer Reports recommended. (November '09 issue I think) It has been over a month and so far I love it. We have a cat and a dog that both shed entirely too much. This vacuum works great on the pet hair and the kid messes. I've used it on wood floors, carpet, and furniture. The unit is heavy, so I wouldn't recommend carrying it up and down stairs. But, I think because of its weight it pulls me through the house, even though it isn't supposed to be self-propelled. Overall I am pleased. I would and have recommended this product.

I owned this vacuume cleaner for about 2 months and hated it every time I used it I finally sent it back to buy a Dyson. It had great suction on hard floors but as soon as it hit carperting and you turned the brushes on they would quit spinning. I would have to hold the vacuume up a little so the brushes could spin and actually pick up dirt and pet hair but it took a toll on my back and a vacuume cleaner should not be that difficult to operate. If the filters were not cleaned every time the canister was emptied it would lose a noticeable amount of suction. I read many reviews about this product before I spent $250.00 on it and all the reviews were great until I bought it and now I am so glad I sent it back. It was a total waste of money and my time even using the vacuume.

After researching several vacuum cleaners on Amazon and at Consumer Reports, I decided to purchase this vacuum and I am so happy I did! I absolutly love it. It is light and easy to handle so it can be taken up and down the stairs with no problem. It is self-propelled, making it very easy to use, and has fantastic suction. My mom has one of those expensive vacuums and I could not believe how much this Hoover picked up after she had already used her vacuum. I also like that there are no bags so one can just dump the dirt in the trash after use. My husband is so happy with it he vacuumed the entire house recently, willingly, which in and of itself is a small miracle. My mom also tried it out and loves it. Very easy for her with her arthritis. A great vacuum. We have only had it a month but so far are really impressed and pleased.

Pros.: Very powerful, convenient to use, excellent performance on bare floors, carpet, upholstery, rugs, etc.

Cons.: Too rough brush bristles - very hard on packed rugs, for instance. Bottom plate of the brush roll assembly collects static electricity when used on rugs and/or carpet, thus accumulating light pet hair. Not too bad, though.

Conc.: Well worth the money. The closest match would be Miele vacuum cleaners if you believe in bagged cleaners in general and are willing to spend three times the money.

I thought this would be a great product to use to clean up pet hair and use on stairs. Wrong! The canister to hold the "dirt" is way too small, you have to empty it with each room! Also when you empty the "dirt" canister, it gets all over everything so if you have allergies to dirt, etc. this will definitely be a problem! The filter is hard to keep clean and the switch is messing up on me already after 2 years. It's just a very messy vacuum cleaner. I guess you "get what you pay for"! I'm going back to a bagged vacuum.

I bought this 5 months ago. It falls very easily when standing against the wall. It overheats and shuts off quickly. I have a very small home and have to stop alot while cleaning. This vac is a great little machine!! Why oh why hoover would you make the cord so short? Other than the short cord, it is hard to beat. It is important to empty the dirt cup after each use especially if you like me live in a zoo of sorts. ie. lots of fur babies!! But I have to say it is great to see all the hair it is picking up. I vacuum my floors (mostly hardwoods with some carpet and area rugs) about every other day and it manages to find enough hair that if I didn't empty it, I think it would put a lot more load on the motor. I wonder if the reviewers who complained of it heating up were emptying it often enough.... Anyway, Hoover, if you are listening, put a longer cord on this little guy and it would be perfect!!

We recently put hardwood floors in our home and I was tired of draggin our heavy regualr vacuum across the house and also was fearful that the regualr vac would damage the floors. I love this vac. It's powerful & quiet. The plastic canister empties easily and the fileter bag inside is rinsable in warm water which I do about every other use. I love it and would buy another if needed.

I love this vacuum cleaner. I had an oreck for the last 5 years, and it got to the point where it wasn't doing its job anymore. So I did some research online and found this to be the best vacuum for the price.

Wow was I surprised, it was better than I had hoped. I have two dogs so the hair is everywhere...and I vacuumed the entire house when I got this in the mail, and my carpets looked so great afterwards, no hair! Yes it is a little heavy, but it has a powerful motor in it, and its worth the minor exercise to keep my carpets clean!

I don't write reviews very often, I usually reserve them for the exceptionally good or really bad...and this vacuum is awesome so I had to write one.

Ever buy a product and out of the box it seems right from the start. Well if you have not, then you might want to try this baby. Yes, it is an upright and maybe a bit, just a bit on the heavy side, but the suction that this baby, or maybe I should say tiger produces is absolutely amazing. I really think this is because of the great design of keeping the suction pipeline as straight as possible till is gets to the bag, and also coupling that with a powerful motor and great rotating brush. It all combines for great pickup and powerful cleaning. The combination of a well designed filter bag and hepa filtration system also keeps much of the excess dust/allergens down while operating the vacuum. Eureka has done its homework on this upright including the powered hand tool which works good in doing stairs and taking hair off of furniture. It would probably work fine on car carpet detailing, but I have not tried it there yet. Filter bags and belts are available at many locations and at reasonable prices. Many of the criticism of this machine are not deserved and are most likely caused by not reading the manual and understanding how the machine functions and also by not keeping the machine cleaned and the filters changed when necessary. In simple words, lazy people don't usually get good results when they refuse to maintain the very machine that is responsible for doing the cleaning. Change filter bags earlier, not later than recommended, clear debris if the suction is decreased, change or blow out the hepa filter frequently and watch for unusual wear on the belt. This vacuum usual retails around $200 but I was able to pick it up for $133.00 with free shipping. After vacuuming the carpets about three times I have noticed how much cleaner they appear and how much more the nap of the carpet seems to stand up. If you are use to just running the heck out of a machine without periodic service and care then no vacuum will last or work for you. Take care of it, do what the instructions say, and it will be a fantastic cleaner for you. I give this vacuum 6 stars out of five because it works way better than it should. Now, for the rest of the story. I am 67 years old and my wife still works full time and I am retired. I do most if not all of the vacuuming and do the entire house about 3 times a week. With this vacuum, I actually enjoy using the machine. Thanks Eureka for a fine product.

Bought this vac after reading reviews and checking Consumer Reports site. The suction is terrific and it seems to be built by the Romans. It would likely be very suitable for a large house with thick wall to wall carpet. However, my house has hardwood floors with fringed area rugs. The vacuum is so powerful that you have to be very careful around rug fringe and it's so heavy that it's very tiring to use on hardwood floors (although it offers this setting). The foot pedal is extremely stiff which is very annoying, and the cord fastener (which pins down the last bit of cord when you wind it up for storage) is so stiff that it's unusable. I'm searching for something more suitable for my house.

The vacuum has good power, actually more than needed. Has a cheap shiny look. I was disappointed that the brush does not always stop when using the paw (upholstery cleaner) or the 'bare floor' setting . Sometimes it will stop and then, in the middle, start rotating. That is what bothered me the most because it can ruin an expensive rug if that is where it was 'parked, while doing the upholstery. Called Eureka, but they were clueless. Returned it to Amazon for a refund-they were pretty good about it. I am surprised how Consumer Reports could give it such high marks. As a result, have canceled my subscription to that magazine.

I bought this vacuum based on Consumer Reports' good review. I disagree, however. The foot peddle release part broke off after two uses so the unit stays up but falls down easily, and if it falls down on your foot, ouch. This vacuum is very heavy and clunky and it feels awkward when in use. Definitely not good for stairs. It's also hard to push on carpet when it's not on. Other plastic pieces have broke including the tube so now it doesn't stay in it's designated spot. The hose doesn't stay in it's designatd spot either and if it's not getting tangled with the cord, it's dragging on the ground. You also have to apply a lot of pressure to change the lever at the base which allows you to switch between carpet and bare floor. And above all that, it doesn't pick-up well on bare floors. I agree with another reviewer who said this is not a vacuum you would want to buy for grandma - definitely not. I'm a fairly strong, young woman and I have a difficult time with it. It's not for children either and this is a great way for them to get out of doing this chore. I cannot believe all the good reviews and I will think twice next time I consider a Consumer Reports review, i.e., do additional research such as check Amazon's reviews. This is a terrible product and I highly doubt I'll ever buy another Eureka.

For the price it WAS, not what I see now..... this is a good vac. It's not the most expensive so don't expect luxury. As long as you remember to regularly clean your filters, it should work like new again. I do hate, as on any Hoover I've ever owned, that the tools come off their storage area's when in use. A plus is it's a little smaller - which works for me. For under $100, I'd buy again. 2 cats/2 years or so, still using.

Would I buy my previous OTHER expensive beltless Hoover again? NO.

It had great suction for the first couple of months but then it started to gradually lose that strength - but we found nothing causing any blockage. The retractable cord is a pretty nifty feature but I sort of loss track of that when wrestling with the top handle that kept coming loose from the base- due to screw coming undone. It's rather bulky. We tried to find a replacement screw but were unsuccessful. Then it just up and stopped working in the middle of cleaning the other day. It wouldn't turn on. We've had it much less than a year. Complete bummer. I don't recommend.

We give two stars for extra long hose, a good effort on suction(the noise makes you "feel" like you're driving a mustang when your suction is a pinto) and retractable cord nifty add-on thingie ---what can I say I like the sparklies ;)

This is by far the worst vaccuum I've ever owned! It picks up no dirt -- just pushes it around. If you have a dog, don't even consider this vaccuum. It takes me about eight sweeps over the same section just to pick up all of the dirt. Instead of three minutes to clean a small room, it takes nearly 20. Two months after I bought this vacuum, the belt broke. Four months later, the vaccuum completely died. Not worth the money.

"Really picks up the dog hair!!" 2010-01-26

After going through 1-2 Dust Busters because their rechargable batteries went dead, I decided to buy an AC-powered vacuum. I bought this one after reading the good reviews, and I just wanted to say how well this vacuum picks up dog hair. I have a pug (OMG the shedding) and tonight I vacuumed my 9x11 foot wool rug. Let's just say I had to empty the dust cup 3 times to get rid of all the hair this cleaner pulled out of the rug. Amazing. Yes, this cleaner is a bit on the heavy side, and so powerful I needed to use one hand to push the vacuum across the rug while the other hand steered. But the end product was well worth it. In a nutshell, buy this vacuum if you have pet hair nightmares!

I got this vacuum to use on my spiral stair case. I recently put in new light beige carpeting which does show dark lint spots. I tried to hadnd brush and lint roll the lint but did not achieve the desired results.

The first time I used this vacuum I was hooked. The vacuum not only picked up the lint but easily picked up the new carpet fibers that were left behind after the install. If you need something for stairs this is the prodcut for you.

I was amazed on how much dirt/lint etc it picked up on new carpeting.

This is the second Hoover Tempo vacuum that we have purchased and the first is still running strong. The main reason for purchasing was because of the Tempo's ability to pick up dog hair. It does a great job at this even after many years of use. Our old Hoover Tempo still does a great job cleaning the carpets and tile. The vacuum comes with hand nozzle and the standard attachments. Belt life is fairly standard with other vacuums that we have owned and durability is quite good for being mostly hard plastic. On our older Tempo, we have replaced the brush roller and something to do with the surface height adjusting. I believe one or both of these repairs were covered on the warranty. The only addition we have had to add to the vacuum was a 12 foot extension cord. Easy to store and easy to use makes this a great buy in a vacuum.

I really take all the reviews on this site very seriously. Considering the amount of reviews on this product, I thought this would really be a good vacuum for everyday, at home, vacuuming. I have to say, it has great suction. It actually has so much, if you are using the attatchments, when you pull the hose away from whatever you are vacuuming, it comes off. It also warns you on the front of the vacuum, that the motor may shut down if it overheats. I was vacuuming a chair, which uses strong suction for a woven material, and it did shut itself off. I think maybe this vacuum has suction that is too strong, if it's going to overheat in 5 minutes of using! The belt actually broke today, when nothing major got run over. The funny thing is, that I just bought it yesterday!! (at Best Buy, because I really needed it right away). The price is actually better on Amazon, which I do love! I did call the company, and they are sending me 2 belts free of charge, but honestly, I'm not thrilled with the product, and don't believe that I will keep it. As far as it's cleaning ability, I believe it does the job. But unfortunately, it makes the job more complicated than it should be.

Just so you know where I'm coming from, this vacuum was purchased to replace a 10 year old upright. My old 10 year old vacuum was working horribly. It wasn't picking up anything and it was a total workout to use. Upon throwing it away, I ripped it apart to fit it into a standard trash bag and found out that the brush belt was broken, so the brush wasn't spinning at all. Lesson learned, keep your vacuum properly maintained. Onto the new vacuum.

This new vacuum is extremely basic. And what I mean by basic is that it doesn't have allot of frills; things like lights or indicators, like the more expensive models. I don't really need any of that stuff. I just need a good working vacuum, and this fit the bill.

Putting it together was simple. Not too terrible. It was put together in less than 15 minutes. Again, once you put it together, you won't be blown away. It's extremely basic looking. What can you expect for $76.50, shipped?

I have three bedrooms and an office with carpeting. All the carpets are fairly new, about 2 years old.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well this vacuum worked. There is no doubt that this thing can get the job done. The brush was really strong and helped facilitate in pushing the vacuum forward, made it an absolute breeze to vacuum all my carpets. It picked up anything and everything that was on the carpet. I've had it for over a month and I do the carpets at least one a week. Sometimes, I'll just take it out to do a nice quick cleaning.

The brush on this is very strong. I have thick pile and you can hear the motor working when I set the brush low. I don't want to work the motor too much so I raise the brush a little. The suction on this is very strong as well. The cord is long enough for me, no complaints.

I'm about to purchase an extension hose, bags and belts. The extension hose on this unit is not very long at all. Maybe 4-5 feet max? Maybe six. It just doesn't seem long enough, the reason I'm buying an extension.

In closing, I would definitely recommend this unit to anyone looking for a cheap, basic, good working vacuum. I think for the money, and how well it works, you just can't go wrong. I gave it 4 stars. If it weren't so cheap looking, I would have given it 5 stars. But, don't let that deter your consideration. I would buy it again.

By the way, the only reason I had even considered this unit was because Consumer Reports gave it a favorable score. It was the 5th best vacuum on their list. And Hoover had five vacuum's in the top ten, which boded well for them.

The Dyson DC17 is a reputable vacuum for those that have the money for such a machine. I was amazed at how much dirt and dog hair was picked up from my rugs. It does a great job at vacuuming. Pluses include it's suction, easy disposal of dirt, long cord (though some say it's too long), and "funky" look. Negatives include it's weight (it is a heavy beast to lug up and down the stairs)and wand. The wand is actually attached to the handle which breaks apart from the main body. It remains attached to the body by a flexible hose. It's unwieldy and cumbersome. If they fixed these two negatives, would give it a 5 star rating.

We purchased the Dyson DC in August of 2006.On August 2009 we noticed the Dyson was not cleaning as it should. We sent it back to Dyson who told us the clutch on the motor was broken and it would cost us $107.00 to fix it. Since we paid over $500 for this Vaccuum and it was only 3 years old, we were surprised to find out that we would be charged to fix the Dyson. Three months after we purchased this vacuum the warranty went from 2 years to 5 years. Seeing we only missed it by a couple months we hoped that they would fix it. When you pay five hundred dollars for a vacuum you figure on it lasting more than three years. I have a ten year old bissell at our cottage that still runs like a charm. We were told by dyson that if we didn't pay the 107.00 that they would not fix it. I had them send it back unfixed. I will not be buying a dyson again!

I've tried to like this vacuum for several years now. It was so expensive I really didn't want to feel like it was a mistake, but I am finally willing to admit that I wish I could be rid of it.

I roll it uselessly back and forth over some TINY speck of something on the floor which it refuses to suck up. It blows the dust and fur in it's path up off of the floor so it doesn't get vacuumed up. The suction is lousy unless the handle is almost upright- so that the suction is closest to the floor- but to hold it in that position you would have to be 7 feet tall with wee, short arms. Ergonomically, it seems to have been designed for a user of at least 6 feet. The hose works pretty well, but to use it you have unfurl the entire cord and then dis/reassemble the thing like an un-fun transformer toy. It makes me angry every time I use it.

One the plus side: it's easy to empty (provided you have a trash barrel that you can make a cloud of dust around) which is good because you'll need to do that after every room.

Ok, had to take a break from my Saturday house cleaning to say how much I love my Dyson Animal Cyclone. I have 2 kids, a cat and 2 dogs (including a chow mix). I hate housework, but I do love the feeling of accomplishment when I vacuum with my Dyson and I empty the container of all the crap that until recently had been in my carpet. I had another bagless vacuum before, but this one empties much easier and cleaner than my Hoover. I never used attachments on other vacuums that I owned because they were too much trouble and never got good suction, but the pull out handle on this gets great suction and is super easy to use. I was hesitant to spend this much money on a vacuum, but I have had it for a year now and I'm so glad that I got it. From now on I will never buy anything but a Dyson.

My Dyson/animal arrive several days before the stated delivery date. (Oh goody....I can clean house now lol). I put it together marvelling at its weight and wondering if I'd be comfortable with such a heavy machine.

It is very easy to maneuver and is virtually self-propelled. I cleaned the living room and dining room carpets. Then I used the hand tools to clean where my regal cat likes to nap on the couch and the decorative pillows. The machine is incredibly powerful! What was pulled out of the carpets and off of the couch (which had been cleaned merely a day before) made me a little queezy. I have a whole new perspective on what a quality vacuum cleaner can do.

Now if it holds up and lasts through its warranty, I will be 100% pleased.

I was torn about buying this vacuum because there were some negative comments about cord length, canister size, etc. But now I think those who criticized it may have used it in the wrong environment (i.e, huge houses with large rooms). I think it is perfect for an apartment, basement, or room cleaning for the average sized rooms that many of us have. The cord is plenty long (more would be in the way) and I cannot say enough about its suction---phenomenal!! Its light weight makes it easy to transport. It is quiet and I'm now convinced that it is really the top of the line. I suggest that if you want the best in a smaller sized vacuum, this is the way to go.

We bought Dyson, after putting up with the Dirt Devil for almost 2 years. When it went on sale, we jumped on it to save almost $100/- The Dyson is a beast. We call it TAZ, cause it eats up anything and everything in its way. I never enjoyed vacuuming till Taz came along and now I have voluntarily taken up this chore from my wife.

To test out the power of Dyson, we first vacummed the house with the Dirt Devil; after assembling the Dyson, gave its maiden and first test run on an already vacuumed carpet. When we were done, it was jaw dropping, Dyson had collected more dust from a cleaned carpet than what Dirt Devil picked up from a 2 week dirty carpet. We were sold and instant gratification on money well spent. It actually made us think, that we lived in such a dirty place for almost 2 years. From that day on, its Dyson vacuums for us all the way.

The Packaging is fantastic. very impressive and the 5 year warranty is good to have as well.

Overall, extremely satisfied.

I've been a Dyson owner for many years. I've always been VERY satisfied with them until this last one. When asked why I've had so many and did they wear out, I'd respond that I just wanted to try the lastest one. I'm a HUGE fan of the Dyson vacuum. The DC24 is a little bit of a disappointment. There is a hose or two that you can't get to if something gets stuck. I spent an hour yesterday trying to unplug one. I assume because it is a smaller machine, the cord is shorter too. Not as convient as the longer cord. My recommendation is, buy Dyson, just not this model.

Hi, Ive been a Janitor for 6 years, last December one of my employers got this vacuum. it took a short while to get use to the ball format, but once that happened, I fell in love with it, its light (which helps when moving across the road to the other campus) its versatile, easily converts for getting corners and spider webs on the wall. also it "lays down" with a spare set of wheels, that allow you to go under tables without having to hold the weight up. also the ball format allows maneuvering under chairs, around corners, and is pretty much amazing. when I have to use old vacuums I am amazed at how heavy they are, and how hard it is to maneuver around corners and such. I suggest this vacuum to everyone I talk to (I even pull them off the shelves at Target to show people who are looking at them how well they work... and I'm not even a target employee!) best vacuum Ive EVER USED! if you need a great vacuum look no further. this is AMAZING!

After going through two of Hoover's bagless WindTunnels in as many years, I bought the Dyson DC25. I am not disappointed. I have owned it for about 2 months and I vacuum at least once (sometime twice) a day. We have two dogs who shed constantly. Plus, we own a horse farm and all sorts of matter is tracked into the house. We have mostly hardwood floors, only the bedrooms and media room are carpeted. The dyson does a great job on both surfaces.

My complaints are minor:

1. The cord is quite short - only about 20 feet, but I find that only a minor inconvenience.

2. It does take some wrangling to use the attachments as you have to disengage the entire handle and hose.

3. My biggest complaint is that cleaning the dust bin (canister) is not as easy as Dyson would like you to think. It requires reaching in to remove dust, and pet hair, that doesn't just fall out when you depress the release button. Also, every 3rd or 4th time it is emptied, you really should take something and brush out the cylcone tunnels and perforated housing. I use a soft 1" paintbrush and it does the trick.

I am giving it 5 stars because - so far- it is keeping up with the dog hair and dust and dirt we track in from the barn, tack room and pastures. I can't ask for more than that.

I have two dogs - one with very long hair, so I have a lot of hair and dirt in my carpets. I received my Dyson DC25 a couple of weeks ago and I've used it several times. I wish I'd had this vacuum instead of my last two Eurekas! Both had great suction but the last one I had was absolutely filty to clean the filter. You had to scrape it off with a toothbrush and wack it on a solid surface to get all the dirt and hair out. Not now. The Dyson sucks up everything and all you do is push the magic button to release the dirt cannister. I'm in love. Whichever reviewer said that it didn't fluff the carpet must have had much stiffer carpet than mine. I find that it does a great fluffing job. The cord length is perfectly adequate for my small house, and I don't really mind that it doesn't have a wind-up feature. Using the attachments is a snap - literally. They snap off the unit and onto the wand/hose. And they stay attached until you push another magic button to release them. All in all, in spite of the price, I'm very happy that I bought the Dyson. I'm planning on having it for a lot of years.

As one other reviewer said. You get what you pay for and with this Dyson we sure did. It was a bit unimpressive out of the box because it was so light I could not believe it would actually live up to the hype, BUT we have 3 dogs and none of the other vacuum cleaners we had tried really worked well. It is GREAT, it has excellent suction and the brushes work on the carpets and you have a handy button that allows you to turn the brushes off in area where you have hard floors and stuff like dog hair could be scattered if the brushes are on. I only give it 4 stars because of the less than handy method you have to use to get the hose out and use the attachments. Since its something we hardly ever do I bought another one of these for upstairs so I obviously like it :) They are not cheap but from all appearances they will last a long time and if it lasts 2 times as long as one that costs half as much (and worked half as well) its a great deal. One last thing, the ball is the best idea anyone ever came up with , you can manuver around and under most everything easily.

I moved to a larger, multi-floor place and needed a lighter, yet more powerful vacuum. With DC25, I can now vacuum more frequently than before thanks to its light weight and ease of use. Though it's light, the motor is as powerful as professional cleaners. There is no hassling plastic bag to take out and dump but a bottom that opens with one touch to drop dusts easily. One of the outstanding feature of this product is its ball-driven movement mechanism. The motor lies actually in the ball that replaces the traditional wheels. It was a little awkward the first time I was using it, but once I learned how to use it I am happy with the change. Differently from legacy vacuums, you can make various types of turns pretty easily by turning your wrist. Two additional sponge filters are very solid and durable compared with other products' sponge filters that break down easily when washing. The downsides that I can think about are: (1) too expensive, so you really need to make sure you need a light vacuum. (2) the cord is short. I mean short really to cover only a room or so. If you have a really large house (>3K sqft), I would recommend to go with ones with longer cords. Overall, awesome!

My wife bought this Dyson DC25 as a replacement for our bagless sweeper and got rid of our other sweeper. I wish I would have used it sooner as this piece of junk would have gone back pronto. I started using this sweeper (too late to return it) and have found it to be a useless overpriced plastic gadget. What a nightmare! There is nothing practical about this sweeper and if you want to get a sweeping job done in time it is worthless. First let me say the parts are cheap plastic snaps and catches which make removal of the attachments and placement almost impossible to do. The worst is the removable handle that becomes the wand. What a joke. Hard to get out and then don't try to reach with it because the hose is impractical at about 2 feet long. The sweeper constantly bangs into your feet while using the wand and there is no handle to hold the sweeper in place. While you are fighting this the cord gets caught around the bottom of the sweeper as the head design constantly catches the cord. I just used this thing today and I was one step short of throwing this overpriced useless gadget into the driveway and smashing it. Buy plenty of duct tape. You'll need it when the cheap clips start breaking. Good points? One is only that you can turn the brush off, but why? We have a parrot and there is a lot of dirt thrown to the floor. I have to sweep with a broom first as this sweeper will not pick up anything larger that a sunflower seed shell. Suction is good sure, but it will not pick up feathers or plant leaves without getting clogged. Save your money unless you have a small apartment maybe.

I am very thankful to be able to agree with all of the other positive reviews. I bought this vacuum in August 2008 and it has been wonderful. One week before I bought this, I thoroughly vacuumed and steam cleaned my carpet. The first time I used this I was shocked at how much dirt was still in the carpet and that this vacuumed performed as well as it did at removing it. I was skeptical and afraid to buy this because it was refurbished but decided to try it out and am so glad I did. I love this vacuum and I tell all my friends how great Dysons are and that they need to check out Amazon before they buy it anywhere else.

I arrived at Target the day after Thanksgiving '08 at 4AM to get this vacuum for $[...] after rave reviews of Dyson from friends. It was a tough decision as Consumer Reports says Dyson isn't worth the money because it doesn't perform any better than less expensive ones, and has no wonderful features to make up the price.

I now wonder what my friend's vacuumed with before their Dysons. How bad could their previous vacuums have been?

I have now had this one for a few months, and I'm disappointed with it and agree with Consumer Reports. My previous Kenmore cheapy, $[...], a best buy recommended by Consumer Reports worked just as well, if not better and was a much more convenient vacuum to use. (Though it didn't last more than four years.)

I didn't mind vacuuming before. Now I put it off due to this heavy CUMBERSOME contraption.

The CORD is very long, but so long that it tangles every single use to less long than a typical cord.

I was excited about the 17' WAND, but it's so STIFF that it takes all my strength to yank it to 6'. I wonder if parking a car on the vacuum and using a tractor to extend the wand would be necessary to make it reach 17'. Seriously, I have a sore back for days each time I use it due to yanking it.

It is NECESSARY to use the wand EACH time you use this vacuum, because it doesn't get close to walls or furniture. Because of this and the fact that there are so many steps necessary to hook up the wand, it takes me twice as long to vacuum now. (All three options of wand use are time consuming.)

This particular vacuum is heavy and bulky.

It isn't a good option if you have area rugs, it tends to grind them up.

I wish there was a head light.

Any attachments you may want to purchase are overpriced. They're the same as others on the market for a quarter of the cost. It makes me wonder if the vacuum itself is the same as others for a quarter of the cost also.

I hear Kenmore attachments fit this.

The included ONBOARD tools are handy.

The way to empty the CANISTER is a nice design, as it prevents much dust from rising up into your nostrels.

The FILTER being washable rather than replacable is a good idea.

Purchase of this vacuum will provide $[...] to breast CANCER research.

My husband and daughter feel silly using this PINK thing.

I'm suspicious of how many refurbished Dysons there are on the market. They're everywhere. It makes me think that the reason they're everywhere is because people buy them hoping they're worth the extra cost, and conclude they are not, and decide to return them before their receipt expires so they don't have to return them with the warrenty. Warrenties are nothing but headaches. (Find the warrenty information, figure out where to mail it, mail it, wait for the verdict, pray that it's something they will fix, what to use while it's being fixed, etc.)

Don't you just wonder why there are SO MANY REFURBISHED ONES available? My guess is that people return them to department stores claiming they don't work so they can get their money back. That's what I'm doing tomorrow morning. I'll just tell them how the wand isn't the length it claims.

After seeing 5 stars, i bought this refurb expecting to suck the carpet off the floor....but it didnt seem to have the suction power promised. It picks up as well as my old hoover, it is just way cooler to see the dirt fly around in the clear canister versus not seeing inside the hoover bag. It also has a nice long cord. glad i didnt pay top dollar, good for the money i paid for refurb.

"Bad customer support..." 2009-03-23

I brought home my brand new Jazz from a local dealer CMW Central Vacuums.

Started using it when I got home after reviewing the manual. The vacuum works great, from continuous medium pile carpet, to low pile to my bare floors it got it all. Very maneuverable, and quiet. The hose reached all but the very top step from the floor of my staircase.

Two nitpicks in design is that the hose pulls out from under the power cord so you have to flip the cord out of the way, not a big deal but would be an improvement if the power cord was just below the hose. You also have to hold the handle of the vac when pulling the hose out because it swivels and will pivot on you left as you pull the hose out from the right.

Another nice feature and my old vac had this but many do not is a handle located lower on the vacuum to make it easier to carry on steps. This is really nice, by having this the weight of the vac is more central to where you pick it up. You just have to try one with and without for yourself.

Now the ugly.. After using it for a little over an hour it started making a clicking sound at random, not very loud but enough that I did not want to continue using it. I took it back and the dealer has it for repair. I called Miele and asked them for a new one, and they would not comply. Needless to say I think a $750 vacuum should be replaced with a new one if it dies in the first 30 days. If this noise comes back after the repair and the warranty is up I'll be stuck with a lemon. I'd expect more from Miele. I hope they are listening.

I can only give this vacuum 1 star due to the way Miele handled my broken vacuum. I will gladly update the review after I use it more and if Miele comes around to replacing it.

"Recommended...with reservations" 2008-04-02

I'm torn. I have a Miele Orion and I like it very well so far, but I have had problems with the radio frequency controls on the handle. In my case, the battery would drain every two weeks or so. I took it back to the shop and they were able to swap out the part for a new one under warranty.

The new handle part has a modified design. Formerly, the buttons for power and suction stood just a little bit proud of the handle, and now, on the new part, there is a molded ridge around the buttons. I suspect that the original design allowed the buttons to get pressed inadvertently while the vac stood in a crowded closet, which caused the battery to drain.

I don't know if Miele made other, internal changes to the design, but the new part is working well so far. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, because I like the vacuum otherwise. It might be safer to choose a different Miele S4 model because of the RF control problems, but, on the other hand, I really appreciate the convenience of the handle-mounted controls.

This is the only Miele S4 Galaxy I have ever repaired. I have repaired several Miele Orions. They all have the same problem. The radio controlled hose controls. This technology is new, and has had problems since day one. They all have been warranty repairs so far, but expensive parts after warranty period. Great cleaning, but some major technology problems in the hose. The antenna for the radio controlled hose also has some issues. The antenna will bend over and point down, which causes difficulty when trying to change the speeds up and down, and turning the vacuum on/off from the hose can be challenging as well. Best idea is to avoid this canister.

I've had this vacuum for almost a month now, and it is one of my favorite things ever! Initially I wanted to get one of the ball ones, but Amazon had a refurbished DC14 at a really good price and I jumped on it.

I really do love this vacuum. The suction is so good that it practically sticks to the floor! In fact, on bare floors, it does! I just moved into a new apartment, and it practically pulled the linoleum up when I first vacuumed!

The attachments are super easy to use, which is another reason I love it. I have kitties that scatter litter everywhere, so the attachments make it super easy to keep that issue under control.

For the people who complained that this vacuum is hard to push, I honestly think it is because the suction is so good. Who can truly complain about that in regards to a vacuum?

Five stars all around, and if I ever do need to buy another vacuum I will buy a Dyson!

I'd give this five stars except that the vacuum we received and the user manual that came with it were slightly different models. No biggie, except the manual made it look like the handle was on backwards when we put it together and that made the assembly process take forever! But once we got it going we loved it. Great price for a great vacuum!

This vacuum sucks like no other vacuum has sucked before!

I can't believe the amount of dirt/detritus it picks up! Before we moved into our 'new-to-us' house, I used it to vacuum the carpets. Even though the previous owner vacuumed the house, the Dyson vacuumed up at least 3 dogs worth of pet hair! Yuck!

And the telescopic hose works great on stairs and chasing down all the food my son throws about.

Next vacuum I buy will be a Dyson.

We have had our refurb DC14 for about 2 years now. I works fantastic. We had 4 dogs when we bought it and it is the only vacuum we have ever tried that could keep up with the hair and dirt they tracked everywhere.

We determined the reason for the flex tube pulling the Dyson so hard is on the spring itself but the incredible suction that the vac creates. When you add suction to something flexible what will it do? it will compress.

The Dyson is heaveier than the Orek, But it is a fraction of the cost and it works incredibly well. This is the best vac we have used. Better than the Orek or the Rainbow.

We have Lots of tile carpet and 1/2 thick foam flooring in the babies room. We also have the large industrial floor mat as a door mat for the dogs. The Dyson has settings for carpet and hard wood. It cleans everything perfectly with the 1st pass. We tried using on an area that we had just vacummed with other machines and the amount of dirt it still got and the amount of dog hair extracted was shocking.

I will never buy a different brand of vacuum. Nothing is better than the dyson.

"Hideous monstrosity..." 2009-04-26

Ours wasn't reconditioned...it was new. First, it's hard to say what is more ridiculous, how much it weighs (not for the elderly or non-weightlifting Olympians) and how difficult and time-consuming it is just to switch from floor-suction mode to the hose attachment in order to clean along baseboards and any other place the clunky chrome housing cannot go. In fact, it doesn't matter that it can supposedly clean a thousand different ways...changing attachments is such a tremendous hassle that you will quickly decide to leave the bulky box of extras in the back of the closet, where it will gather dust. The rest of your home will quickly gather dust as well because cleaning ANYTHING other than obvious traffic paths on the floor is just too tedious to mess with.

And let's not forget the bag! They aren't cheap OR easy to change, and you will need to change the bag when it's only half-full...or less, if you actually want to pick up dirt from the floor.

After three years of purgatory with this thing I was ready for it to have an "accident" so I could buy something else. My husband (who purchased the Kirby and fell for the pitch that it would "last forever and handle all household cleaning needs") couldn't believe anything could be better so I slowly cleaned a carpeted area with a new bag in the Kirby Gsix, then made a quick pass with the DC-7 Dyson. It was truly shocking how much that Kirby was leaving behind and how light and easy the Dyson was to use. ESPECIALLY the wand/hose tool...which is always attached! Just press a button and literally less than a second later you're using the hose and can pop it back on just as quickly to continue cleaning floors.

I know there are Kirby fans, but I'm not one of them. Even if the Dyson only cleaned as well as the Kirby Gsix and not considerably better, our house would still be cleaner because the Dyson is so easy and pleasurable to use and so efficient that it's used more often than the Kirby ever was.
